Jembatan Merah
The red-painted bridge over the Kalimas that once joined the European and Chinese quarters, and a fierce battleground in late 1945.
- Address
- Kalimas crossing between Jl. Rajawali and Jl. Kembang Jepun
- Area
- Pabean Cantian, Surabaya Utara (North)
About
Called the Roode Brug by the Dutch, it began as a wooden crossing and was rebuilt in iron in 1878, linking Jalan Rajawali with Jalan Kembang Jepun. British commander Brigadier Mallaby was killed nearby on 30 October 1945, just before the Battle of Surabaya. It makes a natural starting point for a walk through the revamped Kota Lama.
