Bandung — Kota Kembang — Paris van Java

Bandung, the capital of West Java, sits about 700 m up in a basin ringed by volcanic mountains such as Tangkuban Perahu, so it stays cooler than Jakarta. Art deco buildings line Braga and Asia-Afrika, where Gedung Merdeka hosted the 1955 Asian–African Conference. ITB and dozens of other campuses, factory outlets, cafés and Sundanese food make it a favourite weekend escape from Jakarta.

Best time to visit

June–July (driest months)
In 2025 June and July had just 15 and 13 rainy days, and July's minimum dropped to 17.6°C. Good weather for walks around Braga and day trips up to Tangkuban Perahu; bring a light jacket.
June–August (festival season)
The 2026 calendar put the Asia Afrika Festival in June, the Bandung Arts Festival, Bandung Orchestra Festival and Festival Baso Juara in July, and Bandung Art Month in August.
Late September–October (Hari Jadi Kota Bandung)
The city marks its 25 September birthday with a ceremony at Balai Kota. In 2026 the celebrations ran into October, with the Kirab Jampana procession of decorated palanquins from Jalan Ir. H. Juanda to Balai Kota on 24 October.
October–May (wetter months)
Rain falls all year, but May 2025 brought 320 mm over 24 days and January and April had 25 rainy days each. Expect afternoon downpours: plan museums and cafés and carry an umbrella.

Tips

  • Bandung is cool for the tropics: 2025 averaged 24.1°C, but August nights fell to 17°C, so pack a light jacket for evenings and early starts.
  • Metro Jabar Trans buses cost Rp4,900 cashless (Rp2,000 for students and seniors with a registered card); city-run Trans Metro Bandung is Rp3,000 by QRIS or Rp4,000 cash but stops mid-afternoon.
  • Whoosh high-speed trains link Jakarta's Halim with Padalarang and Tegalluar: from Padalarang a feeder train runs to Stasiun Bandung via Cimahi, and KCIC shuttles leave Tegalluar for the city.
  • Husein Sastranegara airport took jets again from mid-August 2026, so check whether your flight uses Husein (BDO) or Kertajati (KJT) in Majalengka, which is much farther away.
  • Intercity buses now leave from Terminal Leuwipanjang: Terminal Cicaheum ended long-distance services on 26 June 2026 to become a bus depot.
  • The Commuter Line Bandung Raya local train costs a flat Rp5,000 between Padalarang and Cicalengka; book in Access by KAI up to seven days ahead.
