Pasuruan — Kota Santri — Madinah van Java

Pasuruan is a compact coastal city on the Madura Strait, an old trading stop on the Surabaya–Bali road where the colonial sugar boom left a research station founded in 1887. Known as Kota Santri for its pesantren and ulama, it draws pilgrims to the tomb of KH Abdul Hamid by Masjid Agung Al-Anwar, where twelve giant Madinah-style umbrellas stand on the alun-alun.

Best time to visit

May–October (dry season)
Little rain falls from May into November, and July–September are the driest months. Daytime highs average about 32°C and peak in October, so explore early or late.
8 February (Hari Jadi Kota Pasuruan)
The city's birthday, counted from 1686, is marked with a kirab budaya (cultural parade). For the 340th in 2026 it ran from the mayor's office to Taman Harmoni.
Rabiul Awal (Haul KH Abdul Hamid)
Thousands of pilgrims from across Java and beyond come for the yearly haul of the revered ulama. The 44th fell on 2 September 2025; it follows the Islamic calendar, and city schools and offices close for the day.
December–April (wet season)
Heavy rain, and the low-lying city is prone to flooding. Plan indoor stops and check the weather before heading up to Bromo.

Tips

  • At Masjid Agung Al-Anwar and the tomb of KH Abdul Hamid, cover shoulders and knees (women should bring a headscarf), take off your shoes where asked and avoid Friday midday prayers.
  • Bromo (via Tosari), the Prigen and Tretes hills and the Sidogiri pesantren are in Kabupaten Pasuruan, the separate regency around the city. Rural minibuses to Tosari leave from Terminal Blandongan.
  • Stasiun Pasuruan is about 800 m east of the alun-alun. Commuter Line trains run to Surabaya Kota and on to Probolinggo; book seats in the KAI Access app.
  • Blue angkot minibuses fan out from Terminal Untung Suropati (Blandongan) via Pasar Besar. Gojek and Grab both list Pasuruan and are easier for short hops.
  • Living costs are modest: the city's 2026 UMK is Rp3.56 million, far below the regency's Rp5.19 million, and basic kos rooms mostly rent for Rp500,000–850,000 a month.
  • On haul day for KH Abdul Hamid, crowds fill the streets around the mosque and the alun-alun, so plan travel through the centre around it.
