About
Tradition traces the first mosque here to the mid-16th century, and a Javanese inscription at the gate dates the building to 1749. On 17 August 1945, about an hour after the proclamation in Jakarta, a congregant announced independence from the pulpit before Friday prayers; Sukarno came to pray and speak here in 1952. The square in front, rebuilt in 2021 as Aloon-Aloon Masjid Agung, sits beside Pasar Johar.
