About
Since 29 May 2006 hot mud has poured from a vent near the Banjar Panji-1 gas well, burying 16 villages across three kecamatan; it is now held behind tall levees. Local tour guides walk visitors along the embankment and explain what lies beneath, and survivors marked the 20th anniversary here in May 2026. Treat it as a memorial, stay with a guide and keep away from sections under repair, as seepage was reported near the Surabaya–Malang road in July 2026.
