About
The round square was laid out by the Dutch as J.P. Coenplein, and Balai Kota Malang, designed by H.F. Horn, was finished on its edge in 1929. The independence monument in the middle was begun in 1945, destroyed during the Dutch occupation and rebuilt, then inaugurated by President Sukarno on 20 May 1953. Walk the ring of the square in the early evening, when the lotus pond and the lit-up town hall look their best.
