Top experiences
Best time to visit
- June–September (dry season)
- The driest months: July 2025 had just 4 rainy days. Clear mornings suit walks along Jalan Ijen and day trips to Batu or Bromo, but nights get chilly, so pack a light jacket.
- April (Hari Jadi Kota Malang, 1 April)
- The city's birthday month brings contests, bazaars and service fairs around Balai Kota, and Kartini Day events such as the Kartinian ning Kayutangan batik-and-kebaya catwalk on the heritage strip.
- November–March (wet season)
- Heavy afternoon rain: November 2025 brought 477 mm over 24 rainy days, and January 2025 had 25 rainy days. Plan café and museum days and carry an umbrella.
Travel tips
- Malang is cooler than Surabaya, but midday highs still reach 30–32°C. Bring a light jacket for evenings and early starts, especially in July and August.
- Trans Jatim's Malang Raya bus costs Rp5,000 (students Rp2,500) from Terminal Hamid Rusdi via Stasiun Malang to Landungsari and Batu; angkot and ride-hailing apps cover the rest.
- Angkot routes are named after their end points, such as AL for Arjosari–Landungsari. Pay the driver in cash, about Rp5,000 a ride.
- Most flyers use Surabaya's Juanda airport: Cititrans shuttles run eight times a day each way from Rp135,000. Malang's own airport has only a few daytime flights.
- Commuter trains to Surabaya cost about Rp12,000 but sell out fast, so book in KAI Access ahead of time.
- For long stays, kos rooms are the budget option, with most listings in Lowokwaru near the campuses; a basic room costs about Rp500k–800k a month.
